![]() [ PRESENTATION / GENERALITIES ] SCENIC Mobile 300The entry-level notebook with CD-ROM drive option
The SCENIC Mobile 300 is an entry-level notebook with internal CD-ROM
technology as an option, fast PCI data bus and full-blown multimedia features. The notebook baseAll the intrinsic notebook functions are concentrated in the system base unit. This includes the PCI graphics control-ler with 1 MB EDO video RAM. This gives you superior graphics perform-ance at an ergonomic 85 Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 1024 x 768 on the external monitor. A 3.5" floppy disk drive is integrated as standard; if re-quired, this can be replaced by an 10-speed CD-ROM drive. The Fast-IDE hard disk is likewise connected directly to the PCI bus. Two PC Card (formerly called PCMCIA) slots enable two Type I/II PC Cards or one Type III PC Card to be used. One PC Card slot is designated for the use of ZV port PC Cards. The PC Card controller can be easily upgraded to make the Card Bus functionality avail-able, i.e. PC Cards can be operated at full 32-bit PCI bus data transfer rates, leading to performance gains. The 16-bit stereo audio functionality and the associated external interfaces are integrated. The full-screen/full-motion MPEG playback option operat-ing at 30 frames per second is stan-dard, along with the two speakers and a built-in microphone. A 42 Wh nickel metal hydride battery is provided, guar-anteeing that the notebook will operate independently of an ac power source for approx. 2.5 hours. An infrared (IrDA) interface is provided at the rear of the notebook to allow wireless communication between notebooks or with peripheral devices such as printers. This enables data to be sent at serial transfer rates. The configurationThe SCENIC Mobile is available in the following two configurations:- SCENIC Mobile 300 CS and - SCENIC Mobile 300 CTE . The processorsThe replaceable CPU module fitted in the SCENIC Mobile 300 boasts a 120 or 133 MHz Intel Pentium® processor. Thanks to the system board architec-ture it will also be possible to use future Pentium processors. Main memoryIn its basic configuration, the notebook comes with 8 MB of RAM.This is ample for running standard applications under MS-DOS and Windows. For power us-ers, the RAM can be upgraded to a maximum of 40 MB. The memory mod-ules are available in the standard SO DIMM design. The displaysThe displays available for the SCENIC Mobile 300 will satisfy even the most demanding of users. There is a choice of a brilliant, active 11.3" TFT SVGA display (800 x 600 pixels) or an 11.3" DSTN SVGA display. The LCD status display provides information about all important events such as hard disk accesses, battery status etc. The drivesA Fast-IDE hard disk (directly connected to the PCI bus) with a capacity of 1.35 GB comes as standard.A 3.5” floppy disk drive is included in the package. If required, this can be replaced with a fast, 10-speed CD-ROM drive (data transfer rate: 1500 KB/s). The optionalCD-ROM drive also comes with a chas-sis to allow the internal floppy disk drive to be used externally. This means that when the CD-ROM drive is integrated, the floppy disk drive can still be operated externally in parallel. Powerful batteriesThe SCENIC Mobile 300 can be fitted with a powerful NiMH battery or with a Li-Ion battery, which is approx. 20% lighter.Depending on the type of battery used and the power management set-tings, this allows the notebook to oper-ate without ac power for up to 2 hours. Multimedia for all tastesWith the support of the integrated 16-bit stereo audio sound and the two built-in loudspeakers, you can add musical accompaniment to enliven your presen-tations.With 1MB EDO video RAM, im-pressive performance is guaranteed. The external monitor, with its ergo-nomic 85 Hz refresh rate at a resolution of 1024 x 768, will ensure you deliver a glowing presentation. The following interfaces are provided for connecting additional options: Line in, line out, microphone, connector for QuickPort 300/QuickPort 300 Plus, as well as all the standard interfaces. A ZV (Zoomed Video) port is likewise integrated. This new technology sup-ports the use of MPEG PC Cards, so the decompressed audio and video data no longer has to go via the PCI bus, but can be routed directly to the sound system and the video controller. This means that videos can be shown. QuickPort 300/QuickPort 300 PlusSo you want to be mobile yet still be able to connect your peripheral devices conveniently and easily, as well as integrate your notebook into the net-work?With the Quick Port 300 or Quick Port 300 Plus, this is no problem. The Quick Port 300 offers all the standard interfaces, plus ports for concurrent operation of keyboard and mouse, as well as a MIDI / Game port. The Quick Port 300 Plus additionally provides two PC Card slots (1 x Type III and 1 x Type I/II). This means that up to four PC Card slots can be accessed (two in the note-book, two in the Quick Port 300 Plus). The PC Card slots of the Quick Port 300 Plus are protected by a screw-down metal plate to provide anti-theft security for the integrated PC Cards. Touchpad - one more step along the ergonomics roadFor controlling the mouse, the SCENIC Mobile 300 includes a large touchpad (Microsoft mouse-compatible) centrally positioned in front of the keyboard.A double-touch directly on the touchpad is all that is required to launch an applica-tion. Ergonomic keyboardDespite its compact dimensions, the SCENIC Mobile 300 has the same size keycaps as a standard keyboard. The keyboard is moved further back to pro-vide room for a comfortable palm rest. This makes for ergonomic working especially in mobile use. Three extra keys are provided for fast and conven-ient access to Windows 95 functions. Saving energy - with Advanced Power ManagementMaximum performance or maximum battery life - the user has a choice of settings between these two extremes. With Advanced Power Management (APM), the amount of power consumed by system components such as the display, hard disks, floppy disk drive, interfaces, graphics and sound chip, is managed in the most efficient manner. Data security/anti-theft protectionNumerous security functions come as standard with the SCENIC Mobile 300.This includes password protection for the system or setup, as well as safe-guards to prevent booting of the system from floppy disk or PC Card. All the devices feature the Kensington Lock anti-theft system, allowing the notebook to be secured on the desktop or when exhibited at trade fairs. Operating systemsThe following operating systems are available for the SCENIC Mobile 300:DOS 6.22 / Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95 and OS/2 Warp V. 3.0.
